BDS 5 – National Skills Competition

On Wednesday night, Manchester held the heat of the National Dentsply/RCSEd clinical skills competition.

20 of our final year BDS students turned up to prepare an upper right canine tooth for a metal-ceramic crown on a plastic tooth.
They were overseen and indeed at times, serenaded by Professors Nick Grey and Kevin Seymour and the atmosphere was buzzing.

The evening came to end with sandwiches and refreshments and a presentation by Justin Smith from Dentsply whilst the students work was being marked by the Profs Nick and Kevin and also verified by Professor Callum Youngson who is the Head of Dental School in Liverpool.

The standard was very high indeed and the top three were picked after much deliberation.

In third place was Rachel Williams, second place Awais Ali and the winner was Jon Benton who received a rather splendid trophy.

Jon will now head to Edinburgh next year for an all expenses paid trip for the final. This involves the winners of each School in the U.K. wielding their handpieces and demonstrating their prowess in the hope they become ‘Student Clinician of the year’. The overall winner will win an all expenses paid trip for a few days to Switzerland to attend a a prestigious conference.

It really was a highlight of the year and congratulations are extended to all the students who entered and the best of School luck goes to Ben in the final next year.
